Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is often measured through an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which ranks your home from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). It considers factors like insulation, heating systems and airtightness. You can request an EPC when buying or renting a home or arrange an assessment through an energy advisor.

Heat loss is when warm air escapes your home through gaps, poor insulation, or unsealed areas, making your heating work harder and increasing bills. Improving insulation and sealing drafts reduces heat loss, keeping your home warmer and more comfortable.

Look for signs like uneven room temperatures, draughts and cold spots and of course, high heating bills. An energy assessment can give you a detailed overview and specific recommendations to improve efficiency.

Insulation traps heat within your home during winter and keeps it out during summer, reducing the workload on your heating and cooling systems. This leads to lower energy bills and a more comfortable home.

Average energy use varies based on size, insulation, and appliances, but a typical household in England, Scotland or Wales might use around 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas annually (Ofgem). An energy assessment can give a personalised reading.

Financial Support

Key schemes include ECO4, GBIS and the upcoming Warmer Homes Scheme. These schemes can provide grants, subsidies or free measures to help with insulation, heating upgrades and solar installations.

Applications often require an energy assessment and proof of income or benefits status. Our resident energy experts can guide you through the process at our upcoming drop-in sessions.

Warmer Homes offers free or subsidised insulation and heating measures for low-income households. It’s designed to make homes more comfortable and reduce energy costs for vulnerable residents.

Eligibility is generally based on income, benefits received and property type. For ECO4, you typically need to be on certain benefits or live in a property with poor energy ratings. We can help assess your eligibility at our drop-in sessions.

Several government schemes and local grants support renewable energy installations. The schemes often cover part or all of the installation costs if eligibility criteria are met. Check your options with our advisors.

Energy Bills

The energy price cap sets the maximum amount energy suppliers can charge per unit of gas or electricity for default tariffs. It helps protect consumers from sudden price spikes but may still result in high bills, especially for inefficient homes.

A tariff is the rate plan you pay for your energy. Different tariffs, like fixed, variable, or Economy 7 offer different rates and conditions. Comparing tariffs can help you find the best deal suited to your household usage.

Meter readings are crucial for accurately tracking your energy consumption. Regular readings ensure you’re billed correctly and can identify if your energy use is increasing unexpectedly, helping you spot waste or potential issues.

Implementing energy-saving measures such as insulation, upgrading your boiler, fitting a smart thermostat and using energy-efficient appliances can all help reduce your bills significantly.

A smart meter provides real-time data on your energy use, helps you understand your consumption patterns and allows you to control your bills more effectively. Most energy suppliers offer free installation.
