Chetwynd Energy Club, in partnership with the Midlands Net Zero Hub, is exploring the exciting potential of community solar power to benefit our neighbourhood. We want to discover ways for local households to cut energy costs, improve their homes with renewable technologies like solar panels and help us all reduce our impact on the environment. Our goal is to find practical, affordable solutions that can support our community’s drive towards a greener future, starting right here in the Chetwynd, Toton and Chilwell neighbourhoods.
We are in the early stages of a project funded by a regional government grant to develop a potential local solar energy network, owned and run by residents. It’s about creating something lasting and meaningful that benefits current and future generations.

We invite you to learn more about solar energy through our website, join our drop-in sessions to ask questions and share ideas and then complete our short survey to help us shape the best way forward for our community.
An Introduction to Solar

What is Solar PV?
Solar PV (Photovoltaic) systems are a form of technology that convert sunlight into electricity. These systems consist of multiple panels, usually installed on rooftops, that harness the sun’s natural energy. Solar PV is a great way of generating your own electricity, reducing your reliance on traditional grid power.
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then changes this DC electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is used to power our homes. Even on cloudy days, these panels can generate a significant amount of energy, and can be supported by battery storage systems which ensure power remains available, even when the sun isn’t shining.
How Do Solar Panels Save Money?
By producing your own electricity, you can significantly reduce your energy bills. Any surplus energy that isn’t used can be fed back into the grid, potentially earning you money too. Over time, this not only covers the cost of initial installation, but also provides continuous savings on your energy bills.
How Are Solar Panels Better for the Environment?
Solar energy is a clean, renewable resource. Using it reduces greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the impact on our planet and helping to combat climate change. As a community resource, solar power contributes to a collective reduction in our carbon footprint, promoting a healthier environment for everyone.
Do Solar Panels Really Work in the UK?
They do! Despite the UK’s reputation for cloudy or unpredictable weather, solar panels remain effective. They work efficiently throughout all seasons, even in winter. The latest technology ensures that energy can be harnessed even when not in direct sunlight, making solar a viable choice for UK residents.
Is My Home Suitable for Solar?
Most homes can support solar panels. A south, southeast, or southwest facing roof is ideal, but panels can also function reasonably well on east or west-facing roofs. Before installation, a thorough assessment will determine your home’s suitability and the best panel placement for you.
Financial Support
The ECO4 scheme is currently in place to help with the costs of installing solar panels. This government initiative provides funding for energy-efficient home improvements, offering support to eligible households.
Additionally, the Warm Homes Plan is just around the corner and will offer energy saving support to even more UK households, including improved access to measures like solar panels.
Accessing Solar Panel Funding and Support in the Chetwynd Area
Chetwynd Energy Club is exploring potential opportunities to make solar installation more affordable for local residents. We are conducting a feasibility study to understand community interest and needs. By getting involved, you can help shape the future of energy in our area.
